Teaching Qualification

Although the official title of this qualification is the LRN Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, it will be branded as the English Language Teaching and Assessment Certificate. LRN is committed to providing accurate and correct information regarding the title of this qualification to centers, candidates, and other stakeholders.

Objective

The English Language Teaching and Assessment Certificate is designed for individuals with limited experience in teaching the English language to adults. This intensive study program enables candidates to obtain a recognized teaching qualification, focusing on those who wish to specialize in teaching English to speakers of other languages or those who aim to teach English to adult learners.

Candidate Category

Candidates for the English Language Teaching and Assessment Certificate may include those who:

       Seek personal development or skill enhancement within a teaching career;

       Possess limited qualifications or experience in teaching English to adults;

       Wish to consolidate their understanding and/or obtain a recognized qualification in English language teaching.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have:

       Proficiency in all four English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), equivalent to C1 on the CEFR;

       A solid basic understanding of literacy, numeracy, and ICT, equivalent to Level 2;

       Access to at least 12 hours of teaching practice in English language education.

 

Prior basic teaching experience is not required, as this is an initial teacher training qualification. Centers will establish their own procedures for conducting an initial assessment to determine a course applicant’s suitability.

Mode of Delivery

This qualification can be delivered in centers or via distance learning. Centers must demonstrate to LRN, through the center recognition process, that they have the resources, facilities, and expertise to deliver through either method. For the Summer of 2023, the course will be 100% online. Please note that the certificate you will get from our regulator in the UK will be face-to-face, and there will be NO mention of the word “online”.  Centers may apply to offer both methods if desired. Regardless of the method, centers must ensure that practical teaching will be observed and assessed. 

Progression

The English Language Teaching and Assessment Certificate acknowledges the diverse backgrounds, educational levels, and career goals of candidates. Therefore, progression opportunities may take various paths. Depending on the qualification level achieved, candidates may progress to:

       Level 6 Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (subject to individual Awarding Organization (AO) requirements);

       A degree-level program in a teaching-related discipline;

       Any other AO qualification at level 6 or above in teaching or another discipline (subject to individual AO requirements).
